During the period of 1958 to 1960 Magnum Photographer Leonard Freed (1929 - 2006) made photographs of immigrants from Indonesia in Holland.
These Indonesian Dutchmen and Moluccas belonged to the last great wave that, due to the decolonization of Netherlands East Indies, took the boat to the Netherlands. Leonard Freed followed them from the boat to the temporary camps, to their Dutch relatives, in the street, at work and at school.
Leonard Freed lived in Amsterdam from 1957 till 1970. The pictures he made in Holland are social historical documents that tell the history of the Netherlands, the colonial past, war, freedom, religion and politics. But more important ,Freed wants to show the human side of the story with the help of photography. The pictures teach you about yourself and your relation to the world.
Indonesians in Holland is an impressive document about a turbulent and decisive period of the Dutch and Indonesian history.
