The collective policy of the Scheringa Museum highlights the renewed (inter)national realism of the 20st and 21st century. It is not just focussed on expressively copying reality but on realism that provokes something, puts something into motion and ‘grates’.
During the 20st century the realistic painting in Europe experienced a special growth. The realism ran rampant in different forms during the interbellum period. Artists combine elements from reality into a new, own, often alienating reality. The artists who ran rampant in the Netherlands during the twenties and thirties, the magic realists, form the centrepiece within the special collection of the Scheringa Museum for Realism. Through the years, however, the collection has been considerably developed and broadened; works of post war and contemporary top artists have been bought and an eye for young talent has led to a growth of diversity. At the same time the collection has gained coherence because of the possibility to show different cross-bracings.
In this book a representational selection of 150 works of art are included that gives a good impression of the abundance of this collection. The many pictures in colour have been supplemented with well- readable articles that offer an art-historical context.
