Fong-Leng was the first Dutch fashion designer to bring fashion with an international appearance into The Netherlands. She is a source of inspiration for the next generation of couturiers like Viktor & Rolf, who even dedicated one of their shows to her.
Fong-Leng opened her studio in the Amsterdam P.C.Hooftstraat in 1971. For ten years she designed wild and spectacular haute couture creations that caused quite a stir, especially because she showed them at unusual locations like football stadiums, museums and swimming pools. Fong-Leng represents the time spirit of the seventies in her creations.
Fong-Lengs's theatrical robe-manteaus and skirts with appliqués have colourful names like ‘Bird of Paradise', ‘Beam-cloak' and ‘Chinese love couple'. Her most outstanding customer was Mathilde Willink, the wife of the painter Carel Willink. For five years Mathilde bought her full wardrobe at Fong-Leng's. In 1975 Carel Willink portrayed his wife in Fong_Leng's ‘Leopard cloak', a beautiful creation of gold coloured suede and leather with appliqués and plants.
In 1982 Fong-Leng closed her doors to apply herself to interior design and art. Her reputation is still tremendous, a proof of the great impact her clothes had during the seventies and the eighties. The fashion lover who missed this period or wants to get acquainted again with this phenomenon will not be able to get round Fong-Leng.
