The book Kate, Bob & Luca from Katinka Lampe was published on Saturday 14th November. This book, beautifully designed by 75B, offers a good survey of the work of Katinka Lampe. Kristien Hemmerechts wrote, especially for this book, a personal text as a reaction to the paintings of Katinka Lampe.
Katinka is specialized in painting teenager- and children's portraits, often charged culturally and socially by e.g. headscarves, balaclavas and suggestive make-up. Portraying children with such charged elements has an enormous impact because they show less characteristics in their face, therefore easier to manipulate. In this way the artificiality and the alienation that Lampe is looking for, is achieved. The paintings are no real portraits but concepts of images.
Katinka is inspired by pictures from magazines and newspapers and by reproductions of old paintings. Part of "reality " is lost at arranging the scene of a model and taking photographs serving the point of departure for the painting. Consequently the painting is an accumulation of conscious and unconscious stylistic choices, in which Lampe searches for tension between reality and illusion.
